The Revelation Room The Ben Whittle Investigation Series Book 1 eBook Mark Tilbury

I will have to say that if you love an intense, suspenseful, and hair-pulling type of story, this is it. I am a lover of paranormal romance, fantasy, and good dystopian, so I honestly had to force myself to pick up this book. I am also a lover of strong, don’t-mess-with-me heroes and heroines, so my initial reaction to a weak, despairing, noodle-limp protagonist was to want to drop the book, but the story itself hooked me, and I am glad I pushed myself out of my comfort zone for it.

The character of Edward Ebb, a twisted, paranoid schizophrenic with delusions of grandeur who controls a small band of followers, through intimidation, brain washing, and cunning, is brilliantly depicted. He had me screaming in my mind throughout the whole book. Honestly, I’ve seldom hated a bad guy as much!

The pace of the book is pretty good, and there is no sexual content, but there is a great deal of graphic violence. I’d recommend the book highly to adults, but I’d cautious about readers under eighteen years old.

What I didn’t like? I felt the hero was too weak, too self-absorbed and unwilling to rise to action. However, the ending was satisfying and I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

The Revelation Room The Ben Whittle Investigation Series Book 1 eBook Mark Tilbury Reviews

This book is dark, very dark. It's much darker than I thought it would be... which is not a bad thing, because I love dark stories.

I found it to be hard hitting, gruesome, and at times a little sickening.

We open in a typical protestant church somewhere in the U.K. The scene is beautiful and familiar. It reminded me of the church I grew up in, and the pastor, of my own youth pastor back in the day.

But the story isn't about an idyllic church, because very soon, we find ourselves in the midst of a cult run by a raging lunatic who believes that Jesus Christ Himself is instructing him to brutally murder people. The juxtaposition is wonderful, and is a lesson to religious people everywhere about just how dangerous fanaticism can be.

The book mentions Waco a few times to compare the cult to, which I think is a fair comparison. When you start believing that God speaks to you in your head, and He's telling you to do things which are so incredibly out of character of the God who's introduced to us in the Bible, it can only ever end badly.

And it DOES end badly.

The descriptions are exquisitely done, and the thoughts going through the mind of our cultist leader are wonderfully portrayed. This is a psychological thriller to rival the greats, and the author doesn't pull any punches with the horror either - gruesome depictions of depraved acts of brutality abound. This is definitely not a story for even the slightly faint of heart.

The Revelation Room is apparently the first book in a series, although at the time of this writing, the second instalment hasn't been released yet. I normally don't read series (so many books, so little time), but I think that I'm going to be taking a look at the second Ben Whittle. I hope it's half as good as this one!
I have to admit I wanted to read this since I read the first excerpt, and it didn’t disappoint. The story begins a little slow, but that’s to flesh out the two main characters and set the stage for their relationship. For me, it was well worth the wait. Because of that, I developed a strong attachment to Maddie and resented any time she was put into danger. Lol

The other characters were just as well done, and you either feel sympathy or loathe them. The latter was reserved for Edward Ebb while I fought the urge to reach into the story to shake Ben a few times despite feeling for him.

Overall, I felt the story was well done and made me want to keep reading. The gore was well-placed to augment the proper scenes while tongue-in-cheek humor kept the characters grounded in important scenes.

Besides being well-paced, I think it’s a cool contrast between the two opposite ends of the religious spectrum from loving and caring to sociopathic domination. Both of those properties are shown perfectly in Father Tom and Edward as they battled for Ben, Maddie, and the other’s souls.

Overall, I loved this book! This is easily one of the best thriller/suspense/horror stories I’ve read the author has become one of my favorite Indies. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
The plot was exceptional, but the writing weaved in and out from something a 5th grader would write to professional. This story is plausible and very scary. Kids who are running away agree to move to a commune type farm where they are locked in, horribly abused and used, and brainwashed all in the name of "Jesus." A cult leader is a man with a past history of several head injuries, schizophrenia, and has a hatred of women. When a father hires a private detective to find his daughter, a man finds himself inside the compound with no way out.
The actions of the leader were well-done and described the actions of a head-injured person with schizophrenia very well.

Although the scenes are thankfully void of repeated foul language (But there is some), there is detailed violence. I think every high school child should read this book to avoid becoming a cult statistic.
More along the lines of Stephen King horror story. It did drag in a couple of places, but the main characters were fleshed out in some detail which added to the depth of the plot. It was fairly good, though horror and gore are not my normal reading choices.
